Ornamental Features

Butterfly Southern Bush Honeysuckle is primarily valued in the landscape or garden for its broadly spreading habit of growth. It features subtle panicles of yellow trumpet-shaped flowers along the branches in early summer. It has attractive coppery-bronze-tipped dark green foliage which emerges coppery-bronze in spring. The glossy pointy leaves are highly ornamental but do not develop any appreciable fall color.

Planting & Growing

Butterfly Southern Bush Honeysuckle will grow to be about 5 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 5 feet. It tends to fill out right to the ground and therefore doesn't necessarily require facer plants in front, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 20 years.

This shrub performs well in both full sun and full shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist growing conditions, but will not tolerate any standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This is a selection of a native North American species.
